BUSINESS
BIOGRAPHY
The Hi-Gear Co., Inc. helps material handlers and others fight the war
on grime. The Newport, Kentucky company manufactures and sells parts
and supplies for sweepers and scrubbers.
Hi-Gear is a family business with seven family members of the total
twelve employees. LaVerne M. Creamer is the president of the company as
well as the head of the family. Her sons Michael and Daniel along with
a daughter, Allison all work in the company as well as Mike’s wife and
two sons.
Jack Creamer, father and founder of the Hi-Gear Co., Inc. now deceased,
served in the Navy during World War II and worked as a mechanic when he
returned home. Later he became a salesman and parts manager for a Clark
dealer in Cincinnati, Ohio and then for Valley Engine, the first LPM
dealer to open in the country.
Because of his success, LaVerne convinced and encouraged Jack to open
his own company. Together, in 1974 they started Hi-gear. Jack even
designed the company’s logo, the Hi-Gear gearshift that is still used
today.
They began with inventory stored in their basement and dining room of
their home, distributing parts for lift trucks. He dealt with customers
and she kept the books. Together they shared duties caring for their
children and answering the phone. The next year, the company started to
deal in scrubbers and sweepers because Jack had the foresight to know
business would be too competitive to limit the business to lift trucks.
Hi-Gear was actually the first complete parts (scrubber and sweeper)
company in the United States. Jack and LaVerne purchased a house in
Newport, Kentucky and converted it into a stockroom and machine shop,
and as the business grew, built a manufacturing and distribution
center. Hi-Gear sells cleaning machines and manufactures and
distributes parts for them.
In 1982 we chose to become a manufacturer. Instead of going to many
vendors we started making a lot of the products that we sell.; this is
one reason they company has grown and stayed competitive.
Hi-Gear Co., Inc. sells worldwide including Europe, Australia, South
American and Europe. We offer replacements parts and brushes for
Advance, Clarke, Power Boss, Tennant, Factory Cat, Minuteman, Kent,
Nobles, Castex, as well as Star floor machines.
We developed through 30 years of research and experience in the sweeper
and scrubber industry.
